How to Sell a Campervan in New Zealand: Adverts, Payment & Handover

Start preparing your advert before your departure deadline. Compare current asking prices, gather documents and allow time for viewings and inspections. There is no fixed sale time or guaranteed resale price; keep a backup plan if enquiries are slow.

Preparing Your Van for Sale

Deep Clean

First impressions matter. Clean inside and out, remove personal items, make it smell fresh.

Minor Repairs

Fix small issues - they're cheap but make buyers nervous. Worn wiper blades, broken lights, etc.

Check the WoF arrangements

Buyers can insist on a WoF less than one month old. If they accept an older inspection, record that in writing; an expired WoF also requires the buyer’s written acknowledgement and limits road use. Read NZTA’s sale rules rather than assuming that six months remaining proves a recent inspection.

Gather the actual documents

Collect service invoices, WoF and rego details, RUC distance where applicable and current certification for the camper conversion. Keep documents consistent with the advert and disclose known faults.

Taking Great Photos

Timing

Shoot during golden hour (early morning or late afternoon) for best lighting.

Angles

Include: front 3/4 view, rear, both sides, interior bed setup, kitchen area, dashboard, engine bay.

Show the vehicle clearly

Include enough clear photographs to show its condition and equipment. Add close-ups of wear or damage instead of relying on an ideal photo count as a promise of a faster sale.

Honesty

Include photos of any damage or wear. Buyers appreciate honesty and it saves time.

Pricing Strategy

Compare current asking prices

Review similar year, engine, mileage, conversion, location and condition. Asking prices are not completed-sale values; use the site’s sample as one input and explain differences in your advert.

Set your own negotiation limit

Include known repairs and your departure deadline when deciding what you can accept. No fixed negotiation percentage or seasonal discount applies to every van.
