Buy and sell a campervan in New Zealand

Kiwi Van Market connects campervan buyers and sellers in New Zealand. Compare advertised prices, locations, equipment and seller-provided vehicle details; contact owners directly and inspect the vehicle before agreeing a purchase.

Buying a van: the checks that matter

Inspect the mechanics and conversion

Start with a cold engine, then check fluid leaks, coolant condition, rust around the chassis and windscreen, tyre wear and service records. Test the gearbox and brakes on a road test. Check ventilation, battery wiring, gas installation and water leaks; an independent inspection helps assess faults a listing cannot show.

Check WOF and rego separately

A WOF concerns vehicle safety at the time of inspection; rego is vehicle licensing. Ask to see their dates and compare the registration plate with the vehicle. A current WOF does not replace a mechanical inspection or prove the seller owns the vehicle.

Verify self-contained certification

The transition from blue warrants ended on 7 June 2026. Check a valid green warrant and the vehicle certificate for sites requiring certified self-contained vehicles. Certification alone does not permit camping at every location: read council restrictions and site signs.

Agree the sale and update registration records

Meet the seller and inspect the vehicle before paying. Record the vehicle details, agreed price and disclosed faults in writing. Both buyer and seller must notify NZTA of the change of registered person; check the official process and keep the sale records.

Selling a van: prepare a transparent listing

Show the full vehicle

Photograph the exterior, interior, sleeping layout, equipment, engine bay and any damage. Include the model, year, mileage, asking price, pickup city, WOF and rego dates, servicing and certification documents where available.

Explain condition and any buy-back agreement

Describe known faults and recent repairs clearly. Compare similar advertised vans when setting your price. If you offer buy-back, put the timing, repurchase amount, mileage limits and conditions in writing; a calculator estimate is not a guaranteed resale price.

How to read our campervan price data

Prices are asking prices from listings on Kiwi Van Market, in NZD. They are not completed sale prices or an independent valuation of the whole New Zealand market. Model, maintenance, mileage, conversion quality and location all affect value. Treat seller-provided badges as starting points for verification.
